So, one of the comments on this article in the sac bee:

leads me to why I can't get behind the "small government" crowd.  One of the commenters  goes off on how we're already paying for the CDC to do the lab work for things like the swine flu, so we should close down the state public health laboratories as a redundant waste of our money.  This is an example of what I frequently see in that sort of mindset, an idea that there is no service for which there's a redeeming benefit that justifies spending our money on it.  I'm not a huge supporter of big government either, but I do believe that there are some services the gov't is much better equipped to provide,and which are worth paying for.  I'd get behind someone who proposed actually examining government services and doing an evaluation of whether the benefit is worth the cost to us, but no politician of any stripe seems inclined towards such a rational approach.
