New job, day 1
Dec. 6th, 2004 06:58 pmSo, today was my first day at the new job. I'd been looking forward to it, and wasn't disappointed. I'm finally getting to do honest-to-god research in genetics, the sort of thing that I took all these classes to get me prepared for. Everyone in the lab seems cool, and Stacey (My new boss) spent a couple hours describing the first two projects she's going to want me to work on. After I get myself settled & familiar with what they're doing, I'll be expected to be working mostly indepentently on the projects - basically I'll be given a general idea of what we're trying to accomplish (In this case, mapping a gene, and identifying the function of another gene), given some suggestions for where to start, and left to work out how to actually do it mostly on my own. (with people available to ask questions of as needed, of course) This excites me greatly, as it's the sort of job I've been hoping to get for a while now. Hours are going to be 8:30 - 5:30, at least until the end of this month, which is when the woman I'm replacing leaves. After that, I may try and rearrange those a bit, but then again, I may not. The day went by remarkably quickly.
And an interesting note for my fellow ISers - Andi (not sure of spelling, and I don't have my yearbook handy) from our year is working in the lab next door, who we share most of the facilities with. It took me the weekend to work out where I'd met her before (I dropped in Friday & got a tour of the place). Small world syndrome strikes again.
